Physical Education at Westlands

Intent

It is our intent for the Physical Education curriculum to inspire all pupils to enjoy, succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. We will provide our children with opportunities to compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed core values such as fairness and respect. We will strive to ensure that every child meets their potential in order to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

In Key Stage 1, the children will develop fundamental skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. The children will engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities, in a range of challenging situations. Over the year, the children will take part in a variety of games, gymnastics and dance activities.

In Key Stage 2, the children will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and link them to make actions and sequences in movement. We will provide the children with plenty of opportunities to allow them to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing. Throughout the year, the children will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of games, gymnastics and dance.

In addition to the physical benefits of high quality P.E. sessions we also strongly believe that P.E enables the children to develop skills in self-discipline, resilience, improved concentration, good communication and working as part of a team. Our children are also encouraged to take part in a range of extra-curricular sporting activities.

Implementation

At Westlands we follow the 2014 National Curriculum and adapt and it to suit the needs of the learners.  P. E is mainly taught by non – specialist teachers although from time to time, as part of staff professional development, outside agencies are used.  At Westlands we also work closely with Stoke City to deliver sessions both within and outside of the school day.

For further details of this please refer to individual year group’s long term plans and information sent out by class teachers.

Impact

Our P.E. Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes with our monitoring processes;
  • Pupil discussions about their learning;
  • PEDPASS Assessment Grids.
